Psalm 50 (51).

Have mercy on me, O God, according to Your great mercy; and according to the abundance of Your compassion, blot out my transgression. Wash me thoroughly from my lawlessness and cleanse me from my sin. For I know my lawlessness, and my sin is always before me. Against You only have I sinned and done evil in Your sight; that You may be justified in Your words, and overcome when You are judged. For behold, I was conceived in transgressions, and in sins my mother bore me. Behold, You love truth; You showed me the unknown and secret things of Your wisdom. You shall sprinkle me with hyssop, and I will be cleansed; You shall wash me, and I will be made whiter than snow. You shall make me hear joy and gladness; my bones that were humbled shall greatly rejoice. Turn Your face from my sins, and blot out all my transgressions. Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Do not cast me away from Your presence, and do not take Your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of Your salvation, and uphold me with Your guiding Spirit. I will teach transgressors Your ways, and the ungodly shall turn back to You. Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, the God of my salvation, and my tongue shall greatly rejoice in Your righteousness. O Lord, You shall open my lips, and my mouth will declare Your praise. For if You desired sacrifice, I would give it; You will not be pleased with whole burnt offerings. A sacrifice to God is a broken spirit, a broken and humbled heart God will not despise. Do good, O Lord, in Your good pleasure to Zion, and let the walls of Jerusalem be built; then You will be pleased with a sacrifice of righteousness, with offerings and whole burnt offerings; then shall they offer young bulls on Your altar.

Come, all believers, let us celebrate the annual memory of all-lauded St. Euphemia with hymns of praise, and let us salute her and say, “Rejoice! O medaled Martyr, you brought down the arrogance of the tyrants, and you rebuked the senselessness of the heretics. Rejoice! You are the finest offspring of Chalcedon, the unshakable support of the Orthodox. Rejoice! For the sake of Christ, your Bridegroom, you let your physical prime be consumed by torture, as your soul was brightened by the rays of the Spirit. Rejoice! You always intercede for those who with faith and love celebrate your memory.” [SD]

Marvel at the wondrous paradox! The Martyr, lying dead in her reliquary, as though she were alive, clutched our Tome in her precious hand, and had that of the heretics under her feet. She thus rejected it as wrong and blasphemous, and endorsed, as correct and genuine, that of the faithful, who proclaim that Christ, in one hypostasis, has two natures and wills. “O Christ our God, at her intercession, grant peace to Your churches, and great mercy to our souls.” [SD]

O Martyr, who can aptly relate the contests of martyrdom and of faith that, for the sake of Christ, you fought in your frail female body? Who is capable of describing your superiority in virtue, your many miracles, your resoluteness in correct doctrines, and your constant Orthodoxy, O all-lauded St. Euphemia? Because of these, the holy Fathers entrusted you with the definition of the faith, for you were its zealous advocate, and you preserve unaltered for all time. And you intercede on behalf of our souls. [SD]

As we watch the celebration of the feast of the Martyr on earth today, let us be glad in spirit and be moved by exultation. Divine Euphemia has invited us, through the Church’s good hierarch and shepherd. She presents herself to us, and she allows each of us to receive the blessing. So let us go to her with faith, O believers, with no doubt in our minds, no hesitation, that from her holy coffin we may abundantly obtain the cure of diseases. And let us pray that Christ our God forgive us and grant us the great mercy. [SD]

The undefiled bride of the heavenly King, the most sacred Euphemia, has invited us to a spiritual dinner today. Come, all of us who are fond of the Church’s feasts, let us get ready by washing our minds and dressing up in the shiny garments of the divine Spirit; and then let us mystically enjoy her sacred and splendid banquet. She is like a pure dove, beautiful in her virginity, and she was wedded to the Son, and thus she had the entire Holy Trinity dwelling in her, the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, the one God, whom she loved and whom she sought, and for whom she suffered martyrdom. And now she reigns with God forever, in the heavenly habitations. [SD]
