You abandoned the fishery of the deep * and received from the Father the heaven-sent * divine revelation of the incarnation of the Logos. * And unto your Creator you cried out for all to hear,* “I know You, one in essence with the Father, O Son of God.” * Therefore you were truly and most worthily shown forth * indeed as the rock of faith and the man with the keys to grace, * O Apostle Peter. * Intercede with Christ our God * that He grant forgiveness of offenses * to those who with longing observe your holy memory. Ιω 21:15 – 25

Jn. 21:14 – 25

At that time, Jesus revealed himself to the disciples after he was raised from the dead. And he said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” He said to him, “Feed my lambs.” A second time he said to him, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” He said to him, “Tend my sheep.” He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” Peter was grieved because he said to him the third time, “Do you love me?” And he said to him, “Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Feed my sheep. Truly, truly, I say to you, when you were young, you girded yourself and walked where you would; but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will gird you and carry you where you do not wish to go.” (This he said to show by what death he was to glorify God.) And after this he said to him, “Follow me.” Peter turned and saw following them the disciple whom Jesus loved, who had lain close to his breast at the supper and had said, “Lord, who is it that is going to betray you?” When Peter saw him, he said to Jesus, “Lord, what about this man?” Jesus said to him, “If it is my will that he remain until I come, what is that to you? Follow me!” The saying spread abroad among the brethren that this disciple was not to die; yet Jesus did not say to him that he was not to die, but, “If it is my will that he remain until I come, what is that to you?” This is the disciple who is bearing witness to these things, and who has written these things; and we know that his testimony is true. But there are also many other things which Jesus did; were every one of them to be written, I suppose that the world itself could not contain the books that would be written. Amen. [RSV]

Psalm 50 (51).

Have mercy on me, O God, according to Your great mercy; and according to the abundance of Your compassion, blot out my transgression. Wash me thoroughly from my lawlessness and cleanse me from my sin. For I know my lawlessness, and my sin is always before me. Against You only have I sinned and done evil in Your sight; that You may be justified in Your words, and overcome when You are judged. For behold, I was conceived in transgressions, and in sins my mother bore me. Behold, You love truth; You showed me the unknown and secret things of Your wisdom. You shall sprinkle me with hyssop, and I will be cleansed; You shall wash me, and I will be made whiter than snow. You shall make me hear joy and gladness; my bones that were humbled shall greatly rejoice. Turn Your face from my sins, and blot out all my transgressions. Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Do not cast me away from Your presence, and do not take Your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of Your salvation, and uphold me with Your guiding Spirit. I will teach transgressors Your ways, and the ungodly shall turn back to You. Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, the God of my salvation, and my tongue shall greatly rejoice in Your righteousness. O Lord, You shall open my lips, and my mouth will declare Your praise. For if You desired sacrifice, I would give it; You will not be pleased with whole burnt offerings. A sacrifice to God is a broken spirit, a broken and humbled heart God will not despise. Do good, O Lord, in Your good pleasure to Zion, and let the walls of Jerusalem be built; then You will be pleased with a sacrifice of righteousness, with offerings and whole burnt offerings; then shall they offer young bulls on Your altar. Long ago, Moses entered the darkness where God was. * Obtaining divine inscriptions, he promulgated * God’s Law. For cleansing his mind’s eye he saw the only * One who Is and was given knowledge of the Holy * Spirit, whom he honored with inspired songs of praise. [GOASD]

ᾨδὴ γʹ.

Ode iii. Grave Mode.

“Do not leave Jerusalem until you have been clothed * with the power to come from heaven,” * You commanded Your Disciples, O Christ. * “For I will send another Comforter like me. * This will be the Spirit of my Father and of me. * In Him your faith will be confirmed.” [GOASD]

Unembarrassed prayer of the Prophetess Hannah * Shattered fetters on her womb that made her barren, * Ending the irritation of her fruitful rival’s * Needling; for she brought a broken heart and spirit * To the omniscient God and only Sovereign. [GOASD]

I was feeling nauseous from mundane tempestuous worries. * My sins, as if shipmates, threw me overboard into the maw of the beast that devours souls. * Now, like Prophet Jonah, I am praying, * “From this deathly Pit bring up my life, O Christ my God.” [GOASD]

To snatch from corruption Adam and the entire * Human race that was fallen, like Prophet Jonah * Out of the maw of the sea beast, You, our Master, * Shone forth, O Christ our God, from the immaculate * Ever-Virgin, as expiation and salvation. [GOASD]

Those godly Servants, who were cast into the burning fiery furnace, * sang hymns to God, who transformed the fire * and made it like a moist whistling wind were blowing. * They cried out, “You, O Lord, are God of our fathers, and blessed are You!” [GOASD]

Instruments were played discordantly, demanding * Everyone fall down before the gold, lifeless image. * Rousing the faithful now to sing with reverence: * “You are blessed, equipotent, unoriginate * Trinity!” is the luminous grace of the Spirit. [GOASD]

ᾨδὴ ηʹ.

Ode viii. Grave Mode.

We praise and we bless and we worship the Lord.

Unconsumed by fire was the burning bush on Sinai, * revealing God to Prophet Moses, who was weak in speech and slow of tongue. * And zeal for God kept the three Young Men unscathed by fire and led them to compose the hymn: * “O all you works of the Lord, sing a hymn to the Lord, * and exalt Him beyond measure unto all the ages.” [GOASD]

Emblematic of the tri-luminous Godhead, * Releasing bonds and damping flames of old, those Servants * Extolled the Lord and invited all created * Nature to bless and to exalt beyond measure * The only omnific Savior as Benefactor. [GOASD]

Today, all the nations in the city of David saw paradoxical things, when the Holy Spirit descended in fiery tongues, according to the utterance of Luke the theologian. For he said, when the Disciples of Christ were gathered together, a sound came like the rush of a mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And they all began to speak with strange words, strange dogmas, strange teachings of the Holy Trinity. [SD]

The Holy Spirit forever was, and is and will be, never beginning, never ending, but forever ranked and numbered with the Father and the Son. He is life and life-giving, light and giver of light; goodness itself and the source of goodness; through whom the Father is known and the Son is glorified, and by all is known the one power, one order, one worship of the Holy Trinity.

When you were called not by men but by the Most High, * when the earthly darkness caused blindness to come upon * your body’s eyes, manifesting thus to all the people * the gloomy sullenness of impiety, * then it was that all around heavenly light shone forth, * dazzling the eyes of your reasoning, and thus revealing * to all the beauty of Orthodox belief. * Hence you acquired a full knowledge of Christ our God who from darkness brings out the light. * Therefore earnestly pray Him to illumine us and save our souls. When the beginningless Father’s Son and Logos * came to earth and chose His Twelve Apostles, and He asked, * “Who do the people say that I am?” it was Saint Peter, * being preeminent of the Savior Christ’s * Disciples, who then received from heaven grace divine, * and in a loud voice proclaimed and said, theologizing, * “You are the Son of the living God, O Christ.” * Hence he is worthily beatified * for receiving revelation from on high * and the power of binding and of loosing the sins of all.

Lord, You have been our refuge from generation to generation. I said: Lord, have mercy on me. Heal my soul, for I have sinned against You.

Lord, I have fled to You. Teach me to do Your will, for You are my God.

For with You is the fountain of life; in Your light we shall see light.

Continue Your mercy to those who know You.

Blessed are You, O Christ our God. You sent down the Holy Spirit into the fishermen, and You gave them knowledge and wisdom in everything; and through them, as in a net You caught the whole world. O Lord who loves humanity, glory to You! [SD]
