Mode 4. You who were lifted.

Ὁ ὑψωθεὶς ἐν τῷ Σταυρῷ.

They who had visibly competed for Christ’s sake, * were then beneath the earth for centuries hidden. * But now they have amazingly revealed themselves to us, * Raphael and Nicholas and Irene the devout saints, * and their fellow athletes who had piously joined them. * These holy Martyrs all deserve our praise * as wonder-workers, protectors and patron saints. [SD]

Oikos.

You lived together in concord as honorable clergy in the Monastery of Karyes, and there you competed as martyrs according to the rules. By the ineffable decision of the Judge of the games, the Logos and Giver of life, you remained hidden underground for many years, O most wonderful devout monastic Martyrs. But then, how amazing was your miraculous appearance, your strange discovery, and your abundant grace! For not so long ago, your relics came up from the earth, like fragrant flowers and divine treasures that are cherished throughout the world, filled with gifts and grace of martyrdom. You amazingly appear in wakeful visions and in dreams, face to face to many people near and far. When they behold your glory, glory proper to Athletes of Christ, they rejoice with greatest joy, and they proclaim to all what they have seen and heard from you. And they invite everyone to sing your praise, and in a loud voice they exclaim: “Come all, joining voices let us earnestly extol these holy Martyrs who were wondrously revealed to us, for they deserve our praise, as wonder-workers, protectors and patron saints.” [SD]

From the Menaion.

On May 7 we commemorate the Appearance of the Sign of the Precious Cross in the sky, during the reign of the Emperor Constantius, son of Saint Constantine the Great, when Cyril was Archbishop of Jerusalem.

On this day we also commemorate the holy Martyr Akakios.

On this day we also commemorate the contest of the holy Martyr Quadratus and those with him.

On this day we also commemorate our devout Father John Psychaites, the Confessor.

On this day we also commemorate the contest of the holy Martyr Maximus.

On Tuesday of Bright and Renewal Week, we celebrate the memory of the holy, glorious, newly-appearing and wonder-working devout monastic Martyrs, Raphael and Nicholas, and the holy virgin Martyr Irene, and the others who along with them endured martyrdom, on April 9, 1463, which that year was Bright Tuesday, in the ancient Monastery of Karyes, which is located near Thermi on the Greek island of Lesbos. These saints were miraculously revealed to us in the year 1959.

O come, all you nations. Know the power of the awe-inspiring mystery. For Christ our Savior, the Logos who was in the beginning, for us voluntarily was crucified and buried, and He rose from the dead, all to save the universe. Come and let us worship Him. [GOASD]

Praise God in His saints; praise Him in the firmament of His power. [SAAS]

The soldiers who had guarded You, O Lord, reported all the marvelous events that had taken place. But that vain council filled their right hand with bribes, thinking that in this way they could hide Your resurrection, which the world glorifies. Have mercy on us. [GOASD]

The universe is filled with joy since it experienced Your resurrection. Mary Magdalene came to the tomb. She found an Angel sitting on the stone. He was shining like lightning in dazzling apparel, and he said, “Why do you seek the living among the dead? He is not here; for He has risen, as He said. He is going before you to Galilee.” [GOASD]

O Raphael, wondrous martyr, the son of Ithaca, * you were a monk on Lesbos, where you also were martyred. * Now with the unearthing of your divine * holy relics you hallow it; * and by your many appearances you bestow * on the faithful God’s divine saving grace. [SD]

The sacred hill of Karyes has become like Mt. Zion, * where signs from God and wonders have been strangely occurring. * Come all, let us go there with ardent faith * and pay honor and venerate * St. Raphael and St. Nicholas and Irene, * and the others who were martyred there. [SD]

Today a sacred Pascha has been revealed to us; a Pascha new and holy, a Pascha mystical, a Pascha all-venerable, Pascha, the Redeemer Christ himself; a Pascha that is blameless, a Pascha that is great, a Pascha of believers, a Pascha that has opened for us the gates of Paradise, a Pascha that sanctifies believers all. [SD]

Verse 2: As smoke vanishes, so let them vanish, as wax melts before the fire.

Come now from that sight, O you women and heralds of good news, and say to Zion, “Receive from us the joyful tidings of the Resurrection of Christ. O Jerusalem, be exultant, dance and leap for joy, for you have witnessed Christ the King coming forth as a Bridegroom from the sepulcher.” [SD]

Verse 3: So shall the sinners perish from the face of God. And let the righteous be glad.

The myrrh-bearing women at dawn very early, standing outside the tomb of the Giver-of-Life, found an Angel who was seated upon the stone. And the Angel addressed them, and this is what he said, “Why do you seek among the dead the One who is alive? Why do you grieve as though corruptible the Incorrupt? So go back and proclaim it to His Disciples.” [SD]
