Παρθένε πανάμωμε, Μήτηρ Χριστοῦ τοῦ Θεοῦ, ῥομφαία διῆλθέ σου, τὴν παναγίαν ψυχήν, ἡνίκα σταυρούμενον, ἔβλεψας ἑκουσίως, τὸν Υἱὸν καὶ Θεόν σου, ὅν περ εὐλογημένη, δυσωποῦσα μὴ παύσῃ, συγχώρησιν πταισμάτων, ἡμῖν δωρήσασθαι. Ξύλου γευσάμενος, Ἀδὰμ μὴ προσηκόντως, τῆς ἀκρασίας τοὺς καρποὺς πικρῶς ἐτρύγησεν, ὑψωθεὶς δὲ ἐν ξύλῳ τοῦτον ἐλυτρώσω, Οἰκτίρμον, τῆς καταδίκης τῆς χαλεπῆς· διό σοι ἀναβοῶμεν· Δίδου ἡμῖν, ἐγκρατεύεσθαι Δέσποτα, ἀπὸ καρποῦ φθοροποιοῦ, καὶ πράττειν σου τὸ θέλημα, ὅπως εὕρωμεν ἔλεος. Τὸν ἐξ αἱμάτων σου ἁγνῶν σωματωθέντα, καὶ ὑπὲρ ἔννοιαν ἐκ σοῦ Σεμνὴ τεχθέντα, ἐπὶ ξύλου κρεμάμενον μέσον τῶν κακούργων, ὁρῶσα, τὰ σπλάγχνα ἤλγεις, καὶ μητρικῶς, θρηνοῦσα, ἐβόας· Οἴμοι Τέκνον ἐμόν! τίς ἡ θεία καὶ ἄφατος, οἰκονομία σου διʹ ἧς, ἐζώωσας τὸ πλάσμα σου. Ἀνυμνῶ σου τὸ εὔσπλαγχνον.	O holy Virgin, Christ took flesh from thy pure womb and was born from thee in ways beyond our understanding; seeing Him hang between two evildoers on the Cross, thy heart was filled with anguish, and with a mother’s grief thou hast cried out: ‘Woe is me, my Child! What is this divine and ineffable act of Thy loving providence, whereby Thou hast restored to life Thy creature? I sing the praises of Thy deep compassion.’ [KW]

Τὸ ξύλον τὸ πανάγιον, ἀνυμνοῦντες τοῦ Σταυροῦ, τὴν ἄκραν ἀγαθότητα, προσκυνοῦμέν σου ἀεί, Χριστὲ ὁ Θεός· ἐν τούτῳ γὰρ κατῄσχυνας, τὰς δυνάμεις τοῦ ἐχθροῦ, καὶ ἔδωκας σημείωσιν, τοῖς πιστεύουσιν εἰς σέ· ὅθεν εὐχαρίστως βοῶμέν σοι· Πάντας ἀξίωσον, εὐθύμως εἰρηνεύοντας, ἀποπληρῶσαι τῆς Νηστείας τὸν χρόνον.	Singing the praises of the most holy Wood of the Cross, we ever venerate Thy boundless love, O Christ our God. For through the Cross Thou hast put to shame the hosts of the enemy, and hast given a sign to those that set their trust in Thee. Therefore in thanksgiving we cry aloud to Thee: Grant that with good courage and in peace we may all complete the time of the Fast. [KW]

Τὸν ἄμωμον Ποιμένα σε, καθορῶσα ἡ Ἀμνάς, ἐν ξύλῳ ἀναρτώμενον, θρηνῳδοῦσα μητρικῶς, ἐβόα· θανάτω σε, Υἱὲ κατέκρινεν ὁ ἀχάριστος λαός, ἀνθʹ ὧν νεφέλην ἥπλωσας, εἰς διάβασιν αὐτῷ, οἴμοι ἀτεκνοῦμαι ἡ ἄνανδρος! ἀλλʹ ἐξανάστηθι καὶ λάμψον Ἥλιε, καὶ δοξασθήσομαι ἐν τοῖς υἱοῖς τῶν γηγενῶν.	When the Ewe-Lamb saw the innocent Shepherd hanging on the Wood, with a mother’s grief she cried aloud: ‘O my Son, Thou hast spread out a cloud for Thy people as they journeyed through the wilderness, but with ingratitude they have condemned Thee to death. Woe is me! I have no husband, and now I have no Child. But, arise, O Sun, and let Thy light shine forth; and I shall be glorified among the children of mortal men.’ [KW]

Have mercy on me, O God, according to Your great mercy; and according to the abundance of Your compassion, blot out my transgression. Wash me thoroughly from my lawlessness and cleanse me from my sin. For I know my lawlessness, and my sin is always before me. Against You only have I sinned and done evil in Your sight; that You may be justified in Your words, and overcome when You are judged. For behold, I was conceived in transgressions, and in sins my mother bore me. Behold, You love truth; You showed me the unknown and secret things of Your wisdom. You shall sprinkle me with hyssop, and I will be cleansed; You shall wash me, and I will be made whiter than snow. You shall make me hear joy and gladness; my bones that were humbled shall greatly rejoice. Turn Your face from my sins, and blot out all my transgressions. Σῶσον ὁ Θεὸς τὸν λαόν σου καὶ εὐλόγησον τὴν κληρονομίαν σου· ἐπίσκεψαι τὸν κόσμον σου ἐν ἐλέει καὶ οἰκτιρμοῖς· ὕψωσον κέρας χριστιανῶν ὀρθοδόξων καὶ κατάπεμψον ἐφʼ ἡμᾶς τὰ ἐλέη σου τὰ πλούσια·	O God, save Your people and bless Your inheritance. Look upon Your world with mercy and compassion. Raise the Orthodox Christians in glory, and send down upon us Your rich mercies:

Ἐπουράνιε βασιλεῦ, τοὺς πιστοὺς βασιλεῖς ἡμῶν στερέωσον· τὴν πίστιν στήριξον· τὰ ἔθνη πράυνον· τὸν κόσμον εἰρήνευσον· τὴν ἁγίαν ἐκκλησίαν καὶ τὴν πόλιν (ἢ τὴν ἁγίαν μονὴν) ταύτην καλῶς διαφύλαξον· τοὺς προαπελθόντας πατέρας καὶ ἀδελφοὺς ἡμῶν ἐν σκηναῖς δικαίων τάξον· καὶ ἡμᾶς ἐν μετανοίᾳ καὶ ἐξομολογήσει παράλαβε ὡς ἀγαθὸς καὶ φιλάνθρωπος.	O heavenly King, uphold our rulers, strengthen the Faith, calm the nations, give peace to the world. Καὶ ποιοῦμεν Μετανοίας τρεῖς μεγάλας, λέγοντες μυστικῶς ἐν ἑκάστῃ Μετανοίᾳ ἀνὰ Στίχον τῆς ἑπομένης Εὐχῆς τοῦ Ὁσίου Ἐφραίμ.	We now make three prostrations: i.e. we recite the Prayer of St. Ephrem (quietly or mentally), and with each verse we make a bow or prostration.
Ἄν καὶ συνηθίζεται ἡ εὐχὴ αὕτη νὰ λέγεται ἐκφώνως, ὅμως ἡ ὀρθὴ πράξις εἶναι νὰ λέγεται μυστικῶς καὶ νοερῶς ὑπὸ πάντων, κλήρου τε καὶ λαοῦ, ποιούντων τῶν μετανοιῶν κτλ.	While it has become customary for this prayer to be recited by someone aloud, nevertheless the indicated practice is that it be recited inaudibly and mentally by everyone, clergy and congregants alike, with the accompanying bows etc.
Εὐχὴ τοῦ Ἁγίου Ἐφραίμ	Prayer of St. Ephrem
Κύριε καὶ Δέσποτα τῆς ζωῆς μου, πνεῦμα ἀργίας, περιεργίας, φιλαρχίας καὶ ἀργολογίας μή μοι δῷς.	O Lord and Master of my life, do not permit the spirit of laziness and meddling, the lust for power and idle talk to come into me.
Πνεῦμα δὲ σωφροσύνης, ταπεινοφροσύνης, ὑπομονῆς καὶ ἀγάπης χάρισαί μοι τῷ σῷ δούλῳ.	Instead, grant me, Your servant, the spirit of prudence, humility, patience and love.
Ναί, Κύριε βασιλεῦ, δώρησαί μοι τοῦ ὁρᾶν τὰ ἐμὰ πταίσματα, καὶ μὴ κατακρίνειν τὸν ἀδελφόν μου. Ὅτι εὐλογητὸς εἶ εἰς τοὺς αἰῶνας τῶν αἰώνων. Ἀμήν.	Yes, Lord and King, give me the power to see my own faults and not to judge my brother. For You are blessed unto the ages of ages. Amen.

Then we make the sign of the cross 12 times, each time saying, “God, be gracious to me a sinner and have mercy on me.” Then we repeat the third verse of the Prayer (quietly or mentally) and make a final bow or prostration.

May Christ our true God, through the intercessions of His all-pure and all-immaculate holy Mother, the power of the precious and life-giving Cross, the protection of the honorable, bodiless powers of heaven, the supplications of the honorable, glorious prophet and forerunner John the Baptist, of the holy, glorious, and praiseworthy apostles, of the holy, glorious, and triumphant martyrs, of our righteous and God-bearing fathers, (local patron saint); of the holy and righteous ancestors of God Joachim and Anna, and of all the saints, have mercy on us and save us, as He is good, benevolent, and merciful God.
