Triadic Hymns

Mode 3.

O Trinity, consubstantial and undivided, O Unity, with three hypostases and co-eternal, to You as God we shout the hymn of the Angels: Holy, holy, holy are You, our God. By the power of Your Cross save us. [SD]

Glory.

Daring to glorify the unoriginate Father, the co-unoriginate Son, and the co-eternal Spirit, the one Godhead, we utter in the manner of the Cherubim: Holy, holy, holy are You, our God. By the intercessions of the Saints save us. [SD]

Both now.

The Judge will arrive suddenly, and the actions of each of us will be laid bare. So, with fear, let us cry out in middle of the night: Holy, holy, holy are You, our God. Through the Theotokos have mercy on us. [SD]

The appointed Kathisma of the Psalter may be read, i.e. Kathisma 19. There is no litany, but immediately the following:

Τὴν ὡραιότητα.

The regiments of Angels were amazed by the immensity of Your authority and the voluntary nature of Your crucifixion, as they watched how You, who are invisible, were being whipped in the flesh, wishing as You did to rescue human nature from corruption. Therefore they cried out to You, the Giver of Life, “Glory to Your compassion, O Christ!” [SD]

Verse: Exalt the Lord our God, and worship at the footstool of His feet; for He is holy. [SAAS]

The Cross was set up on the earth, and it touched the heavens; not that the tree reached that height, but that You who were on it fill all things. Glory to You, O Lord. [SD]

Glory. Both now. Stavrotheotokion.

We have obtained the Cross of your Son, O Theotokos, as a rod of power. By it we subdue the insolence of the enemies. And with love we magnify you unceasingly. [SD]

Psalm 50 (51).

Have mercy on me, O God, according to Your great mercy; and according to the abundance of Your compassion, blot out my transgression. Wash me thoroughly from my lawlessness and cleanse me from my sin. For I know my lawlessness, and my sin is always before me. Against You only have I sinned and done evil in Your sight; that You may be justified in Your words, and overcome when You are judged. For behold, I was conceived in transgressions, and in sins my mother bore me. Behold, You love truth; You showed me the unknown and secret things of Your wisdom. You shall sprinkle me with hyssop, and I will be cleansed; You shall wash me, and I will be made whiter than snow. You shall make me hear joy and gladness; my bones that were humbled shall greatly rejoice. Turn Your face from my sins, and blot out all my transgressions. Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Do not cast me away from Your presence, and do not take Your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of Your salvation, and uphold me with Your guiding Spirit. I will teach transgressors Your ways, and the ungodly shall turn back to You. Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, the God of my salvation, and my tongue shall greatly rejoice in Your righteousness. O Lord, You shall open my lips, and my mouth will declare Your praise. For if You desired sacrifice, I would give it; You will not be pleased with whole burnt offerings. A sacrifice to God is a broken spirit, a broken and humbled heart God will not despise. Do good, O Lord, in Your good pleasure to Zion, and let the walls of Jerusalem be built; then You will be pleased with a sacrifice of righteousness, with offerings and whole burnt offerings; then shall they offer young bulls on Your altar. [SAAS]

Ode viii. Mode pl. 2. (NM) Accepting danger

Νόμων πατρῴων.

Verse: Bless the Lord, all you birds of heaven, all you wild animals and cattle, and exalt Him beyond measure, unto all the ages. [SAAS]

By Thine own will, compassionate Lord, Thou wast crucified in the middle of the day in the midst of the earth, and Thou hast plucked the ends of the world from the midst of the dragon’s jaws. Therefore in this middle week of the holy Fast we venerate and glorify Thy precious Cross, crying aloud: Praise ye the Lord and exalt Him above all for ever. [KW]

Verse: Bless the Lord, O children of men. Bless the Lord, O Israel, and exalt Him beyond measure, unto all the ages. [SAAS]

O sign of joy, unconquerable weapon, rampart of the Church, glory of martyrs, adornment of apostles, firm support of bishops, strengthen my sickly soul, and count me worthy to venerate thee and to sing thy praises, crying: O ye works of the Lord, praise ye the Lord and exalt Him above all for ever. [KW]

Verse: Bless the Lord, O priests of the Lord, O servants of the Lord, and exalt Him beyond measure, unto all the ages. [SAAS]

O longsuffering Lord, I mourn and weep and lament, when I call to mind how I shall be condemned before the judgement seat where there is no respect of persons. Therefore spare me and lighten the heavy yoke which weighs upon my soul, that I may cry rejoicing: O ye works of the Lord, praise ye the Lord and exalt Him above all for ever. [KW]

Verse: Bless the Lord, O spirits and souls of the righteous, O holy ones and humble in heart, and exalt Him beyond measure, unto all the ages. [SAAS]

Theotokion.

O all-blameless Virgin, the bush was a figure of the mystery of thy childbearing that no mind can understand. For like the bush thou hast remained unconsumed when thou hast borne the Fire, Christ our Saviour, who was lifted on the Cross. Pray to Him that I may be delivered from the everlasting fire as I cry aloud: Praise ye the Lord and exalt Him above all for ever. [KW]

Verse: Bless the Lord, O Hananiah, Azariah, and Mishael, and exalt Him beyond measure, unto all the ages. [SAAS]

Cleansed by fasting, come and let us embrace with love the Cross of Christ that is set before us. For unto us it is a treasury of strength and sanctification, and by its power we sing the praise of Christ for ever. [KW]

Verse: Bless the Lord, O Apostles, Prophets, and Martyrs, and exalt Him beyond measure, unto all the ages. [SAAS]

Here before us is the great and threefold Cross: though it appears small, yet it reaches up to heaven; by its power it raises men to God, and in its name we bless Christ for ever. [KW]

Glory. For the Trinity.

I glorify one Substance in three distinct Beings: Father, Son and Spirit, neither confused in Persons nor divided in Essence; for there is one God in Trinity, ruling over all. [KW]

Both now. Theotokion.

Alone among mothers, Mary Bride of God, thou hast remained a virgin. Without knowing man thou hast given birth to the Saviour Christ, yet kept the seal of thy purity unbroken; and with all the faithful we shall call thee blessed for ever. [KW]

Glory to You, our God, glory to You.

Let us honour this holy Wood, which, as the Prophet said of old, was put into the bread of Christ by the Israelites who crucified Him; and let us exalt Him above all for ever. [KW]

We praise and we bless and we worship the Lord.

[All-holy] Cross of Christ, guard us by your power.

Thy side was pierced with a spear, and Thou hast poured upon us a fountain of forgiveness. On this middle day of the Fast, we embrace the Wood of the Cross and sing the praises of Thy goodness. [KW]

O mountains, flow with sweetness, and little hills, pour forth joy and love. Trees of the plain and cedars of Lebanon, rejoice today at the veneration of the lifegiving Cross. Prophets and martyrs, apostles and spirits of the righteous, dance in gladness. [KW]

Verse: As he spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets from of old. That we should be saved from our enemies, and from the hand of all who hate us. [RSV]

O Lord, look favourably upon Thy people and Thine heritage, who sing Thy praise with fear, and for whose sake Thou hast suffered voluntary death. Let not the countless number of our evil deeds vanquish Thy compassion, but in Thy surpassing goodness and Thy love for mankind save us all by Thy Cross. [KW]

Verse: To perform the mercy promised to our fathers, and to remember his holy covenant. [RSV]

Stavrotheotokion.

‘Crucified of Thine own will, Thou dost shake the visible world, and yet Thou still remainest hanging on the Cross’, said the Theotokos weeping. ‘For it is Thy purpose, O Christ, to set free the passiondominated thoughts of the first-formed man and in Thy love to heal his brokenness.’ [KW]

Verse: The oath which he swore to our father Abraham, to grant us that we, be[ing] delivered from the hand of our enemies. [RSV]

When Elisha once drew the axe-head from the river with a piece of wood, he prefigured thee, O Cross: for thou art the lifegiving wood with which Christ has drawn the nations from the depths of the madness of idolatry, when He was nailed upon thee. We therefore venerate thee and we glorify His power. [KW]

Verse: [That we] might serve him without fear, in holiness and righteousness before him all the days of our life. [RSV]

O Saviour, the radiance of the sun was turned to darkness at Thy Crucifixion, the light of the moon was quenched, and all the elements trembled and were changed. And so I cry to Thee: My thoughts have been turned to darkness by the passions; changing me with Thy right hand, O Word, give me light and save me. [KW]

Verse: And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Most High; for you will go before the Lord to prepare his ways. [RSV]

Psalm 148.

Praise the Lord from the heavens; praise Him in the highest. Praise Him, all you His angels; praise Him, all you His hosts. Praise Him, sun and moon; praise Him, all you stars and light. Praise Him, you heavens of heavens, and you waters above the heavens. Let them praise the Lord’s name, for He spoke, and they were made; He commanded, and they were created. He established them forever and unto ages of ages; He set forth His ordinance, and it shall not pass away. Praise the Lord from the earth, you dragons and all the deeps, Fire and hail, snow and ice, stormy wind, which perform His word, mountains and all the hills, fruitful trees and all cedars, wild animals and all cattle, creeping things and flying birds, kings of the earth and all peoples, princes and all judges of the earth, young men and maidens, elders with younger, let them praise the Lord’s name, for His name alone is exalted; His thanksgiving is in earth and heaven. And He shall exalt the horn of His people, a hymn for all His saints, for the children of Israel, a people who draw near to Him. [SAAS]

Psalm 149.

Sing to the Lord a new song, His praise in the assembly of His holy ones. Let Israel be glad in Him who made him, and let the children of Zion greatly rejoice in their King. Let them praise His name with dance; with tambourine and harp let them sing to Him; for the Lord is pleased with His people, and He shall exalt the gentle with salvation. The holy ones shall boast in glory, and they shall greatly rejoice on their beds; the high praise of God shall be in their mouth and a two-edged sword in their hand, to deal retribution to the nations, reproving among the peoples, to shackle their kings with chains and their nobles with fetters of iron, to fulfill among them the written judgment: This glory have all His holy ones. [SAAS]

Psalm 150.

Praise God in His saints; praise Him in the firmament of His power; praise Him for His mighty acts; praise Him according to the abundance of His greatness. Praise Him with the sound of a trumpet; praise Him with the harp and lyre; praise Him with timbrel and dance; praise Him with strings and flute; praise Him with resounding cymbals; praise Him with triumphant cymbals; let everything that breathes praise the Lord. Alleluia. [SAAS]

While it has become customary for this prayer to be recited by someone aloud, nevertheless the indicated practice is that it be recited inaudibly and mentally by everyone, clergy and congregants alike, with the accompanying bows etc.
