When you worthily became the shepherd of the flock of Christ, * by divine decree, O Saint, you drove the wolves out of it, * using the words of your sermons like a slingshot. * You readily rebuked those who were breaking the law. * They spitefully expelled you, Father Chrysostom. * And for the sake of your flock you traveled * a long road, on which you died at last. * But you returned to Constantinople, * granting divine gifts of grace. Joseph marveled when he saw that which transcends nature’s laws: * You conceived without the seed of man, O Mother of God. * Then he remembered the dew on the fleece of Gideon, * the bush that Moses saw burning yet not consumed, * and Aaron’s rod that sprouted and blossomed forth. * And your betrothed and guardian bore witness * before the priests, and he cried aloud, * “The Virgin gives birth, and after childbirth * still she remains a virgin.” [SD]

O Chrysostom, you were shown to be a gold-sounding trumpet, a speaker of golden words, making golden the hearts of believers, by your golden teachings. As the Prophet said, the proclamation of your dogmas went forth, O righteous Father, and illumined the ends of the whole world. [SD]

On January 27 was the transfer of the relic of our father among the saints John Chrysostom, Archbishop of Constantinople.

On this day, the holy Empress Marciana, who is buried in the church of the Holy Apostles, died in peace.

On this day, devout saint Claudius died in peace.

On this day, devout saint Peter the Egyptian in deep old age died in peace.

The holy Neomartyr Demetrius, who witnessed in Constantinople in the year 1784, died by the sword.

By their holy intercessions, O God, have mercy on us. Amen.
