God is the Lord, and He revealed Himself to us. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. [SAAS]

αʹ.

Verse 1: Give thanks to the Lord and call upon His holy name.

βʹ.

Verse 2: All the nations surrounded me, but in the name of the Lord I defended myself against them.

γʹ.

With the rivers of your tears you made the barren desert bloom; and with your sighs from deep within, you made your labors bear their fruits a hundredfold; and you became a star, illuminating the world by your miracles, O Theodosios, our devout father. Intercede with Christ our God, for the salvation of our souls. [SD]

As You were baptized in the Jordan, O Lord, then the worship of the Trinity became manifest, for the voice of the Father bore witness to You, naming You the Beloved Son; and the Spirit, in the form of a dove, confirmed the certainty of the word. O Christ God, who appeared and illumined the world, glory to You. [SD]

Lk. 6:17-23

At that time, Jesus stood on a level place, with a great crowd of his disciples and a great multitude of people from all Judea and Jerusalem and the seacoast of Tyre and Sidon, who came to hear him and to be healed of their diseases; and those who were troubled with unclean spirits were cured. And all the crowd sought to touch him, for power came forth from him and healed them all. And he lifted up his eyes on His disciples, and said: “Blessed are you poor, for yours is the Kingdom of God. Blessed are you that hunger now, for you shall be satisfied. Blessed are you that weep now, for you shall laugh. Blessed are you when men hate you, and when they exclude you and revile you, and cast out your name as evil, on account of the Son of man! Rejoice in that day, and leap for joy, for behold, your reward is great in heaven.” [RSV]

Psalm 50 (51).

Have mercy on me, O God, according to Your great mercy; and according to the abundance of Your compassion, blot out my transgression. Wash me thoroughly from my lawlessness and cleanse me from my sin. For I know my lawlessness, and my sin is always before me. Against You only have I sinned and done evil in Your sight; that You may be justified in Your words, and overcome when You are judged. For behold, I was conceived in transgressions, and in sins my mother bore me. Behold, You love truth; You showed me the unknown and secret things of Your wisdom. You shall sprinkle me with hyssop, and I will be cleansed; You shall wash me, and I will be made whiter than snow. You shall make me hear joy and gladness; my bones that were humbled shall greatly rejoice. Turn Your face from my sins, and blot out all my transgressions. Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Do not cast me away from Your presence, and do not take Your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of Your salvation, and uphold me with Your guiding Spirit. I will teach transgressors Your ways, and the ungodly shall turn back to You. Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, the God of my salvation, and my tongue shall greatly rejoice in Your righteousness. O Lord, You shall open my lips, and my mouth will declare Your praise. For if You desired sacrifice, I would give it; You will not be pleased with whole burnt offerings. A sacrifice to God is a broken spirit, a broken and humbled heart God will not despise. Do good, O Lord, in Your good pleasure to Zion, and let the walls of Jerusalem be built; then You will be pleased with a sacrifice of righteousness, with offerings and whole burnt offerings; then shall they offer young bulls on Your altar. Once you were planted, like the Psalm says, in the courts of your Lord, * you blossomed forth the most resplendent virtues pleasantly, * and you filled the desert with spiritual children * who were watered with showers of your ardent tears, * as the leader of divine monastic shrines of God. * So we cry to you: Rejoice, Father Theodosios! Although you were human in nature, O Father, you seemed a compatriot of angels. O wise one, you discarded all care for the flesh, and you lived on earth as one bodiless. Therefore you hear us saying: [SD]

Israel treaded on the sea’s swelling billow, * which had been rendered once again into dry land. * Then the dark waters concealed all the Egyptian * riders together, as a tomb laid in water, * by the mighty strength of the right of the Master. [SD]

From the ancient snares of the gluttonous lions, * whose teeth are broken, we all have been delivered. * Let us exult, then, and our mouth let us widen, * weaving melody from words unto the Logos, * whose delight it is to bestow gifts upon us. [SD]

Once purged by the fire of mystical vision, * the Prophet, hymning the renewal of mortals, * cried in a loud voice energized by the Spirit, * telling the ineffable Word’s incarnation. * He it is who crushed the power of the princes. [SD]

The Spirit’s cleansing has washed away from us now * the dark and dirty enemy’s poison venom. * Therefore we have landed on a new unerring * path, which leads to happiness that has no access, * save to them whom God to himself reconciled. [SD]

With the blessed utterance proclaimed the Father * Him He produced from the womb His beloved Son. * Yes, He said, this is My own connatural offspring, * splendor of My light, now also borne of mankind, * both My living Word, and by providence mortal. [SD]

He who impeded once the towering fire * within the furnace that held the pious young men * burned the dragons’ heads in the streams of the river, * and the stubborn stain of sin He has completely * washed away therein, with the dew of the Spirit. [SD]

To deal retribution to the nations, reproving among the peoples.

To shackle their kings with chains and their nobles with fetters of iron.

To fulfill among them the written judgment: this glory have all His holy ones.

Praise God in His saints; praise Him in the firmament of His power.

Praise Him for His mighty acts; praise Him according to the abundance of His greatness. [SAAS]

O devout Theodosios, you made yourself into a house of the sacred virtues; then you were counted worthy to visit and live in the holy shrine of the Theotokos. You loved to contemplate the radiance of God. Now you behold the grandeur of the true tabernacle and its inexpressible beauty. This was founded by God Most High, and He gladly lets those who aspire to Him dwell there. Entreat Him to grant great mercy to our souls. [SD]

Praise Him with the sound of trumpet; praise Him with the harp and lyre. [SAAS]

All-blessed Saint, after you purified yourself through ascetic labors, you began to imitate your Master; for you cured the illness of the woman who touched the hem of your garment; you fed those in the desert who were suffering from famine. Your name means God’s gift, and you lived up to it, ever giving from the endless treasure. Devout Theodosios, you proclaimed the Orthodox Faith, and thought nothing of the tyrant’s anger. Entreat Christ to grant great mercy to our souls. [SD]

Praise Him with timbrel and dance; praise Him with strings and flute. [SAAS]

You kindled in yourself the flame of ardent and fervent and unyielding love for God; and from heaven you received a beacon of fire in return, showing God’s good pleasure, which instructed you to build a most holy church, a school of virtue, and a training ground of souls. You started it, and piously finished it. * Now your body, which labored much, reposes there, and it is especially honored among the other sacred caskets. O all-blessed Father, entreat Christ to grant great mercy to our souls. [SD]

Praise Him with resounding cymbals; praise Him with triumphant cymbals; let everything that breathes praise the Lord. [SAAS]

O Theodosios, you have truly gone over to the wondrous tabernacle, the house of God, with joy and gladness, where are heard delightful sounds of festive songs, and the sweet voices of those who celebrate, and where you also are participating in joy of heart and ineffable delight. For you mortified the flesh, and desired only that joy; and having found it, O Father, you are adorned with God’s righteousness. Entreat Christ to grant great mercy on our souls. [SD]

That ladder of the virtues, he proved to be an example for us on earth. So let us extol him, as the jewel of ascetics. He truly practiced ascetic discipline, like Anthony the Great, and he attained immense humility. He shepherded his people in Orthodox manner, and herded them into the holy fold, where the host of Saints has settled. Let us say to him earnestly: “Do not ever forget your flock, O all-blessed Theodosios, but intercede with the Lord to save us, we pray.” [SD]

Today Christ came to be baptized in the Jordan. Today John touches the head of the Master. The hosts of heaven were astounded seeing the paradoxal mystery. The sea beheld it and fled; when the Jordan saw, it retreated. And we who are now illumined cry aloud, * “Glory be to God who appeared, and who was seen on earth, and who illumined the world.” [SD]

Lord, You have been our refuge from generation to generation. I said: Lord, have mercy on me. Heal my soul, for I have sinned against You.

Lord, I have fled to You. Teach me to do Your will, for You are my God.

[SD]
