LITURGY OF ST. JOHN CHRYSOSTOM

Unless otherwise indicated, the texts of the prayers and hymns of the Divine Liturgy are produced and approved for use by the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America.

First Antiphon. Mode 2.

Verse 1: It is good to give thanks to the Lord and to sing to Your name, O Most High. [SAAS]

Through the intercessions of the Theotokos, Savior, save us. [GOA]

Verse 2: To proclaim Your mercy in the morning and Your truth at night. [SAAS]

Second Antiphon. Mode 2.

Verse 1: The Lord reigns; He clothed Himself with majesty; the Lord clothed and girded Himself with power. [SAAS]

Verse 1: Come, let us greatly rejoice in the Lord; let us shout aloud to God our savior. [SAAS]

Save us, O Son of God, Who are wondrous in Your saints. We sing to You, Alleluia. [GOA]

Verse 2: And He established the world, which shall not be moved. [SAAS]

Verse 2: Let us come before His face with thanksgiving, and let us shout aloud to Him with psalms. For the Lord is a great God, a great King over all the earth. [SAAS]

Only-begotten Son and Logos of God, being immortal, You condescended for our salvation to take flesh from the holy Theotokos and ever-virgin Mary and, without change, became man. Christ, our God, You were crucified and conquered death by death. Being one of the Holy Trinity, glorified with the Father and the Holy Spirit: Save us. [GOA]

Save, O Lord, Your people and bless Your inheritance, granting victory to the faithful over the enemy, and by Your Cross protecting Your commonwealth. [SD]

In Your kingdom. Remember us, O Lord, when You come in Your kingdom. Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven [RSV]

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied. [RSV]

Adam fell by a tree, and he was evicted from Paradise. * By the tree of the Cross the Robber gained entrance to Paradise. * The former, by tasting fruit, disobeyed his Maker's commandment not to eat. * The latter was crucified with Him, whom though hidden he confessed to be God. * Remember us as well in Your kingdom, O Savior. [SD]

Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. [RSV]

When the Hosts of heaven saw * You, O Master, stretched out upon the Cross, * at a loss they were appalled, * O forbearing Lord, and beside themselves. * The earth was shaking back and forth, * and the lovely glow was extinguished of the stars. * While You were unjustly judged, * Adam the condemned man was being justified, * O Lover of man, * and he extolled Your benevolence. Blessed are you when men revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely [for my sake]. [RSV]

You crushed the head of the foe * by Your crucifixion on Calvary. * And by dying on a tree, * those who from the fruit of the tree were dead * You quickened, O sovereign Lord, * and You established them as the citizens * of the Garden of Paradise, * O Christ our God, and they with unceasing hymns * extol You and cry aloud: * Remember us in Your kingdom. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven. [RSV]

For the Martyrs.

Having taken up the Cross * as your armor, thus you went forth to meet * and do battle with the foes, * O martyrs, with a valiant attitude. * And making an end of them, * you received the crown of incorruptibility. * And glory was given you * and the brilliant splendor from God, O most-divine * saints deserving of praise. * Therefore do we call you blest. [SD]

You were nailed upon the Cross * so as manifestly to demonstrate * Your compassion for us, Lord. * And You bore the whippings and ridicule * the reed and the vinegar, * You who with the Father and Spirit coexist, * O Savior, enduring all * intending to rescue from everlasting fire * those who cry out to You: * Remember us in Your kingdom. Brethren, God has exhibited us apostles as last of all, like men sentenced to death; because we have become a spectacle to the world, to angels and to men. We are fools for Christ's sake, but you are wise in Christ. We are weak, but you are strong. You are held in honor, but we in disrepute. To the present hour we hunger and thirst, we are ill-clad and buffeted and homeless, and we labor, working with our own hands. When reviled, we bless; when persecuted, we endure; when slandered, we try to conciliate; we have become, and are now, as the refuse of the world, the off-scouring of all things. The Gospel

Friday of the 6th Week of Matthew

The reading is from the holy Gospel according to Matthew.

Mt. 13:44-54

The Lord said this parable, "The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and covered up; then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field. Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant in search of fine pearls, who, on finding one pearl of great value, went and sold all that he had and bought it. Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net which was thrown into the sea and gathered fish of every kind; when it was full, men drew it ashore and sat down and sorted the good into vessels but threw away the bad. So it will be at the close of the age. The angels will come out and separate the evil from the righteous, and throw them into the furnace of fire; there men will weep and gnash their teeth. Have you understood all this?" They said to him, "Yes." And he said to them, "Therefore every scribe who has been trained for the kingdom of heaven is like a householder who brings out of his treasure what is new and what is old." And when Jesus had finished these parables, he went away from there, and coming to his own country he taught them in their synagogue. [RSV]

Hymn to the Theotokos.

It is truly right to bless you, Theotokos, ever blessed, most pure, and Mother of our God. More honorable than the Cherubim, and beyond compare more glorious than the Seraphim, without corruption you gave birth to God the Logos. We magnify you, the true Theotokos. [GOA]

You worked salvation in the midst of the earth, O Christ our God. Alleluia. [SAAS]

Mode 2.

We have seen the true light; we have received the heavenly Spirit; we have found the true faith, worshiping the undivided Trinity, for the Trinity has saved us. [GOA]

THE DISMISSAL

Glory to You, O Christ our God. Glory to You.

May Christ our true God, through the intercessions of His all-pure and all-immaculate holy Mother, the power of the precious and life-giving Cross, the protection of the honorable, bodiless powers of heaven, the supplications of the honorable, glorious prophet and forerunner John the Baptist, of the holy, glorious, and praiseworthy apostles, of the holy, glorious, and triumphant martyrs, of our righteous and God-bearing fathers, (local patron saint); of the holy and righteous ancestors of God Joachim and Anna, and of all the saints, have mercy on us and save us, for He is good and merciful and loves mankind.

Fasting Rule

Strict: Refrain from meat, fish, oil, dairy, and eggs.
