By Your own choice you were pleased to ascend the Cross in the flesh, to deliver us, whom You created, from our slavery to the foe. Therefore we cry to You with gratitude: You have filled all things with joy, O our Savior, by coming to save the world. [SD]

When the Martyrs of the Lord competed in the contests, then through their faith the audacity of the ungodly was dimmed. Also, when inspired by God they brought an end to the error of idolatry, then they received the crowns of victory from on high. And now they intercede on behalf of our souls. [SD]

You, all-lauded maiden, were on fire with love for Christ the Bridegroom. So you ran, like a thirsty gazelle to the ever-flowing springs. You preserved yourself, through martyrdom, and you went inside the truly incorruptible bridal chamber of your Creator, O glorious Irene, as a glorious bride, adorned in various colors, as one chosen, wearing a crown, and from the incorrupt Bridegroom you received, as if gold, the award for winning your contest. From the Menaion.

On May 5 we commemorate the holy Great Martyr Irene.

On this day we also commemorate the contest of the holy Martyrs Neophytus, Gaius, and Gaianus. The service in their honor is celebrated in the august and venerable church of the holy, glorious, and wonderworking Unmercenaries Cosmas and Damian, in the Quarter of Darius.

On this day we also commemorate the Consecration of the Church of the Most Holy Theotokos at the Quarter of Cyrus in Constantinople.

On this day we also commemorate the contest of the holy and glorious monastic martyr Ephrem, the lately revealed miracle-worker, who lived in ascetic discipline on the Mount of the Blameless in Attica, Greece, and who was martyred in the fifteenth century.

By their holy intercessions, O God, have mercy on us. Amen.
