Bless the Lord, O my soul. O Lord my God, You are magnified exceedingly; You clothe Yourself with thanksgiving and majesty, who cover Yourself with light as with a garment, who stretch out the heavens like a curtain; You are He who covers His upper chambers with water, who makes the clouds His means of approach, who walks on the wings of the winds, who makes His angels spirits and His ministers a flame of fire. He established the earth on its stable foundation; it shall not be moved unto ages of ages. The deep like a garment is His covering; the waters shall stand upon the mountains; at Your rebuke they shall flee; at the sound of Your thunder, they shall be afraid. Remembering our all-holy, immaculate, most blessed, and glorious Lady, the Theotokos and ever-virgin Mary, with all the saints, let us commend ourselves and one another and our whole life to Christ our God.

Set a watch, O Lord, before my mouth, a door of enclosure about my lips.

Incline not my heart to evil words, to make excuses in sins.

With men who work lawlessness; and I will not join with their choice ones.

Standing between Old and New, O God-inspired * Prophet and Forerunner John, and angel in the flesh, * you were the fruit of a barren womb, * a fire-breathing * mouth of the Lord that reproved iniquity. * You censured king Herod for his immorality; * but he could not bear to be reproved, * therefore he ordered * his men to cut off your ever-blessed head; * and you were served up as a final course, * you the God-sent delicacy of self-control. * Even set on the platter, * you were scorning that licentious man. Blessed Alexander, you became * for the Church a shepherd and for Orthodoxy a champion, for by your fervent prayers * and your supplications * to the Savior of the world, * you humbled the pretension of Arius. And now entreat the Lord, * supplicating that surpassing peace * and great mercy * be upon our souls bestowed. [SD]

Praise the Lord, all you Gentiles; praise Him, all you peoples. [SAAS]

You hated corruption of the flesh, * honorable father John. By self-control and by ardent faith and careful vigilance * and by your confession, you became an earthly angel and a heavenly man as well. At ignoble Herod’s birthday party, the promiscuous dancer’s wish was promised and granted; and the Forerunner’s head was cut off and brought in on a dish, as her prize, in the presence of the dinner guests. Oh! Unsavory banquet, replete with profanity and bloody murder! But we, for our part, honor the Baptist as is right, and we call him blessed, for among those born of women none is greater than John. [SD]

You were lifted on the Cross, O Christ our God, and You saved the human race; therefore, we glorify Your sufferings. [SD]

Verse: I lift my eyes to You, who dwell in heaven. Behold, as the eyes of servants look to the hands of their masters, as the eyes of the maidservant look to the hands of her mistress, so our eyes look to the Lord our God until He shall have compassion on us. [SAAS]

You were nailed upon the Cross, O Christ our God, and You opened the gates of Paradise. You, our Redeemer, do we glorify. [SD]

Mode 4.

Herod threw an immoral birthday party and a most irreverent banquet. Seduced by feminine sensuality and goaded by his ungodly lust for women, he cut off the Forerunner’s head but could not turn off the Prophet’s tongue, which censured his iniquity. He spilled innocent blood, wishing to conceal his immoral sin. But even so, he could not stifle the voice of him who shouted to all, “Repent!”. Herod rejoiced in killing, but we celebrate with longing, the blessed slaughter of John the Baptist. He went ahead of the Savior to Hades, and to those who sat in the darkness and shadow of death he announced the coming of life, Orient from on high, Christ our God, the only very merciful One. [SD]

Therefore, when for the truth you had contested, rejoicing, to those in Hades you preached the Gospel, that God was manifested in the flesh, and takes away the sin of the world, and grants to us the great mercy. O God of our Fathers, since You always deal with us in accordance with Your gentleness, do not withdraw Your mercy from us, but at their fervent entreaties, pilot our life in peace. [SD]
