PRIEST (from the gate)

Lk. 6:17-23

At that time, Jesus stood on a level place, with a great crowd of his disciples and a great multitude of people from all Judea and Jerusalem and the seacoast of Tyre and Sidon, who came to hear him and to be healed of their diseases; and those who were troubled with unclean spirits were cured. And all the crowd sought to touch him, for power came forth from him and healed them all. And he lifted up his eyes on His disciples, and said: "Blessed are you poor, for yours is the Kingdom of God. Blessed are you that hunger now, for you shall be satisfied. Blessed are you that weep now, for you shall laugh. Blessed are you when men hate you, and when they exclude you and revile you, and cast out your name as evil, on account of the Son of man! Rejoice in that day, and leap for joy, for behold, your reward is great in heaven." [RSV]

( Glory to You, O Lord, glory to You. )

Psalm 50 (51).

Have mercy on me, O God, according to Your great mercy; and according to the abundance of Your compassion, blot out my transgression. Wash me thoroughly from my lawlessness and cleanse me from my sin. For I know my lawlessness, and my sin is always before me. Against You only have I sinned and done evil in Your sight; that You may be justified in Your words, and overcome when You are judged. For behold, I was conceived in transgressions, and in sins my mother bore me. Behold, You love truth; You showed me the unknown and secret things of Your wisdom. You shall sprinkle me with hyssop, and I will be cleansed; You shall wash me, and I will be made whiter than snow. You shall make me hear joy and gladness; my bones that were humbled shall greatly rejoice. Turn Your face from my sins, and blot out all my transgressions. Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Do not cast me away from Your presence, and do not take Your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of Your salvation, and uphold me with Your guiding Spirit. I will teach transgressors Your ways, and the ungodly shall turn back to You. Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, the God of my salvation, and my tongue shall greatly rejoice in Your righteousness. O Lord, You shall open my lips, and my mouth will declare Your praise. For if You desired sacrifice, I would give it; You will not be pleased with whole burnt offerings. A sacrifice to God is a broken spirit, a broken and humbled heart God will not despise. Do good, O Lord, in Your good pleasure to Zion, and let the walls of Jerusalem be built; then You will be pleased with a sacrifice of righteousness, with offerings and whole burnt offerings; then shall they offer young bulls on Your altar. You put off the garment of corruption through very intense ascetic discipline, and you were clothed with the magnificence of incorruptibility, by the action of the Holy Spirit, O God-bearing Gerasimos. Therefore, O wonder-working father, pray that enlightenment and divine mercy be given us. [SD]

Mode 4. You appeared today.

You have shone upon the Church, O holy father, * as a glowing beacon light * illuminating with the bright * light of your miracles those who sing: * Rejoice, O glory of holy monks, Gerasimos. [SD]

Oikos.

As a newly shining star rising mystically on the Church of Christ, O holy one, you have shown by the flashes of your virtues and the light of your miracles that the effulgence of Orthodoxy shines on all more brilliantly than the sun. You mortified the mind set on the flesh through a life of ascetic endeavor, and you strove with great longing to emulate the devout monastic saints of old. Therefore you were deified by participation, and you gained the wealth of divine gifts, and received the power to do miracles. And by the illustriousness of your fine qualities, you teach all to aspire to things superior. And now, the Island of Cephalonia, hallowed by your ascetic struggles, holds the treasure of your relic as God-given wealth and a treasury of divine grace, and is thereby delivered from every tribulation, and for this reason praises you unceasingly. While the entire Orthodox Church of Christ, also boasting in you, remains steadfast and unshaken, and puts to shame the nonsense of heretics, and in gladness cries out to you: Rejoice, O glory of holy monks, Gerasimos. [SD]

It is appropriate to stand for the reading of the Synaxarion.

Thus says the Elder to the nuns, "My children, be at peace among yourselves, and do not be haughty, but humble yourselves for the Lord, who for us humbled himself and took the form of a servant; for He said He gives grace to the humble. Remember that you have renounced the things of the world and are joined to Christ, who is more beautiful than all men, and who has promised His kingdom to those who crucify themselves together with the passions, and follow Him in truth. Watch, therefore, and pray, that you may escape the traps and nets of the one who would destroy your souls.
